Computational Modelling of Harmony

چکیده

Many computational models for processing music fail to capture essential aspects of the high-level musical structure and context, and this limits their usefulness, particularly for musically informed users. In this talk I describe two recent approaches to modelling musical harmony which attempt to reduce the gap between computational models and human understanding of music. The first is a chord transcription system which uses a high-level model of musical context in which chord, key, metric position, bass note, chroma features and repetition structure are integrated in a Bayesian framework, achieving state-of-the-art performance. The second approach uses inductive logic programming to learn logical descriptions of harmonic sequences which characterise particular styles or genres. Each approach brings us one step closer to modelling music in the way it is conceptualised by humans.

Probabilistic and Logic-Based Modelling of Harmony

Many computational models of music fail to capture essential aspects of the high-level musical structure and context, and this limits their usefulness, particularly for musically informed users. We describe two recent approaches to modelling musical harmony, using a probabilistic and a logic-based framework respectively, which attempt to reduce the gap between computational models and human und...

Development of Techniques for the Computational Modelling of Harmony

This research is concerned with the development of representational and modelling techniques employed in the construction of statistical models of four-part harmony. Multiple viewpoint systems have been chosen to represent both surface and underlying musical structure, and it is this framework, along with Prediction by Partial Match (PPM), which will be developed during this work. Two versions ...

A Computational Model That Generalises Schoenberg’s Guidelines for Favourable Chord Progressions

This paper presents a formal model of Schoenberg’s guidelines for convincing chord root progressions. This model has been implemented as part of a system that models a considerable part of Schoenberg’s Theory of Harmony. This system implements Schoenberg’s theory in a modular way: besides generating four-voice homophonic chord progressions, it can also be used for creating other textures that d...

Robustness of Ethnocentrism to Changes in Interpersonal Interactions

We use the methods of evolutionary game theory and computational modelling to examine the evolution of ethnocentrism. We show that ethnocentrism evolves in a spatially structured population not only under prisoner’s dilemma interactions, but also hawk-dove, assurance, harmony, and leader games. In the case of harmony, ethnocentrism evolves even when defection is irrational. This suggests that t...

The computational analysis of harmony in western art music

This thesis describes research in the computational analysis of harmony in western art music, focussing particularly on improving the accuracy and information-richness of key and chord extraction from digital score data. It is argued that a greater sophistication in automatic harmony analysis is an important contribution to the field of computational musicology. Initial experiments use hidden M...
